From the 18th century onwards, many thinkers, scientists and philosophers, questioned the dogmas of the Church, the arrangement of nature and even absolute monarchy. The work on universal gravitation by Isaac Newton, or Diderot's Encyclopedia for example, have largely contributed to this evolution of thought. In doing so, they spread the spirit of the Enlightenment and laid the foundations of democracy and the modern State.
