The documentary series "The History of Russian Food" offers viewers the opportunity to learn so many surprising things about seemingly familiar subjects that they'll rightfully ask: why has Russian television so far ignored the history of national cuisine? For example, is it true that a feast during the time of Ivan the Terrible began with hundreds of roasted swans? Why were Russian medieval feasts criticized by foreigners? How was the monarch protected from poisoning? Or how did the concept of "tipping" come into being? What did "drinking from someone's face" mean? What did lean years mean for Rus'? How did Russians escape the famine caused by crop failure? And, in general, how did Russian cuisine develop and evolve over the centuries? Where did certain foods originate that have become an integral part of the national menu? Why have so many foods and drinks disappeared from our lives? What kind of dish is "perm," and where did the strange saying "No problem – quinoa" come from?
